Our history

We started as Heart to Heart International (HHI), an international NGO that began working in Haiti in the difficult aftermath of the earthquake in 2010. Out of these recovery efforts came the birth of Heart to Heart International-Haiti (HHI-Haiti). Even prior to the earthquake, the lack of basic public infrastructures, information and qualified people in rural areas has resulted in the proliferation and expansion of archaic medical practices.

In April 2022, Heart to Heart International Haiti the organization has evolved into an international Haitian foundation called Fondation Voix des Communautés de Base (FVCB) which continues the same HHI-Haiti programs, using the same resources, and partnership including Heart to Heart International USA

FVCB programs aim not only to improve access to health for local people, but also to involve communities in responding to major public health problems. Indeed, while most international agencies have focused on an emergency response and early recovery, HHI approached disaster recovery in Haiti with a long-term focus using a three-dimensional strategy in the formation of HHI-Haiti:
1- Take into account pre-existing conditions
2- Handle actual, existing and situational conditions
3- Target long-term sustainability

Upon the establishment of HHI-Haiti, the team assessed the needs and identified the root causes of community problems. The organization was careful to examine the distribution of basic services, the needs of communities, and the involvement of local leaders. The need to build community capacity and to involve local populations – especially in the most remote areas far from international assistance -was noted.
